Contact lenses were invented by a German oculist, A.E. Fick, as early as in
1887 and were given the name of contact then. However they were not widely used until 1930s, because the contact lenses in early times were made of glass which is easily broken thus dangerous to eyes. And it is not until 1947, with the invention of keratoscope, that they began to become popular.
Comparing with traditional glasses, modern contact lenses do have several advantages. The images one get through them tend to be more close to the reality, especially for person with high myopia. They have no frame so they won’t press your nose and without the frame you can also get a wider range of view. And for beauty-chasing girls, contact lenses are absolutely more attractive for them than the traditional glasses. However, contact lenses do have their disadvantages and are not suitable for everyone. The contact lenses closely sticking to your corneas are actually foreign objects for your eyes. So for some, wearing them can be very uncomfortable. As the contact lenses have a direct contact with one’s eyes, they must always keep clean. So there will always be much annoying maintenance work. People who cannot maintain a good personal hygiene are not ideal users for them. Teenagers whose eyeballs haven’t fully developed also shouldn’t wear contact lenses for the side effect may damage their immature eyes. Besides, old people should avoid using contact lenses too. In fact, if you are already in your 40s, you should begin reducing the time of using contact lenses. A pair of aging eyes just can’t afford the convenience and beauty brought by those contact lenses.
Environment also limits the use of contact lenses. If working or living in a place full of dusts and smoke, it is advisable that you don’t wear them. And if you are in an enclosed environment with volatile acid or alkaline substance in, you’d better not wear contact lenses, either.
So you can see, although contact lenses possess many advantages, not everyone can wear them. And even for those who meet the standard, they cannot wear them in all the places all the time. When use them, do be careful. After all, you don’t want your eyes to go through any permanent damage, don’t you?
